Adur's planning committee has approved plans to demolish Ashcroft House, in Kingston Lane, to make way for new purpose-built flats. The existing bungalows on the site will be refurbished to make them more energy efficient.

Ashcroft House has been empty since 2020. Officers will now appoint a construction firm, with work expected to begin on the site towards the end of 2023.

Cllr Carson Albury, Adur's Cabinet Member for Adur Homes and Customer Services, said: “These homes are built to really high standards, and will be comfortable and energy efficient. We listened to feedback from residents, and thought carefully about how best to provide the right mix of privacy and communal areas. I look forward to seeing the work progress.”

The development is designed to be secluded and set back, but also have a community feel. It will feature a central green lawn, food growing spaces and a common room for residents.

The landscape design is an integral part of this scheme, harmonising the new building into the existing setting, providing a beautiful landscaped garden for residents and ecological enhancement to the wider area.

It will also have air source heat pumps instead of gas boilers, a solar panel-ready roof, and efficient insulation to help keep fuel bills down.

The total cost of the development is expected to be around £11 million, with Homes England and the Brownfield Land Release Fund contributing to the funding of the scheme.
