In his new role as Building Commissioner 2023 (Building Safety) at Building, Andrew Mellor, Partner at PRP Development Consultancy, recently spoke with the Magazine as part of their series 'Meet the Commissioners'. Andrew talked about the quality of build, technological change and the need to improve competency in the industry.

Andrew discussed the lessons that can be learned from the past, highlighting the importance of quality control and using natural and local materials. He also spoke about the impact that the Grenfell tragedy has had on the industry, forcing a focus on quality, competency and risk management.

Andrew noted that the construction industry builds some high-quality buildings but highlighted the issue of past poor-quality construction resulting from a focus on cost reduction rather than quality. He stressed the importance of upskilling individuals and improving competency to improve the industry.

Regarding the biggest change he has seen in his career, Andrew pointed to the rapid adoption of computers, software and AI for design and analysis. Looking ahead to Building Magazine's 200th anniversary, Andrew predicted further government policy and legislation changes, which will require the industry to respond and adapt.

Andrew also spoke about his passion for sustainability and environmental issues inside and outside of work. He emphasised the importance of the industry tackling safety issues beyond fire, such as structure, overheating and mould.

Overall, Andrew's interview with Building Magazine provides an insightful view of the construction industry's current challenges and opportunities. His call for a focus on quality, competency and environmental sustainability will no doubt resonate with many in the industry and beyond. A full copy of the article can be found via the link below.
