3D laser scanning: creating the golden thread with Multivista

February 26, 2021

We are using Multivista on several façade remediation schemes. It's a 3D Laser Scanning solution that captures data on-site and feeds it straight to a drawing. It allows team members to view progress on-site without everyone visiting in person. When contractors are installing cladding and insulation, it prevents anything from being missed as photographs are taken at critical stages and tagged.

The system creates a timeline of activity permanently recorded, so it is possible to go back to view work, checking installations have been done correctly, creating the golden thread of data. Everything is kept on the Multivista server, and any team member can view it live and make comments. It is excellent for collaboration and for visually recording what has physically been installed.

Case Study - Dan Court

Dan Court is a full linear fire remediation project replacing the ACM cladding and brickwork façade to the entire building. Dan Court is a block of 150 flats of mixed tenure, with each flat having its own private amenity space such as a balcony or terrace.

To ensure a full digital record is formed and maintained detailing each fire barrier and the building's whole façade build-up, PRP and Catalyst approached Multivista, who are specialists in this field. Multivista were engaged in providing a digital map of the existing building, which included a 3D laser scan of the building to allow accurate measurement.

During the construction phase, Multivista undertook twice-weekly inspections to capture the installation and photograph every section of the elevation from each scaffold lift, which was then transferred onto their digital platform. This platform enabled a live stream of detailed imagery on every aspect of the construction.

The use of this platform also enables the contractor's own auditing photographs and reports to be accurately attached to precise locations on the digital record, thus providing a thorough and concise record of all new installations. Each fire barrier, balcony detail, spandrel etc., has been mapped onto the digital platform and is available for the client and their internal departments to locate and view any aspect of the façade replacement.

An additional function of this platform is the ability for additional stakeholders to view and add imagery of issues or progress photographs and reports to the record. These again enable accurate reporting and precise location tagging of any defects and how they were remedied. We have found this an invaluable tool in ensuring the client has a complete and thorough the digital record of the new façade for years to come.
