Planning permission has been granted for the final phase of a 1,900-home visionary development in Harlow, Essex. 64 new homes as well as a range of community and commercial facilities are set to be built in the final and ‘most important’ piece of the Newhall development designed by PRP for Newhall Projects Ltd.

Designed to the highest standards of architecture and masterplanning, the 280-acre wider development, successfully combines cutting edge housing designs with rural tradition to create ‘a new community where people genuinely want to live’. With a real focus on placemaking, 40 per cent of the development is dedicated to open spaces, and every home is within 60 metres of a green space.

Located near The Chase and Newhall Primary School, the final phase - also known as the Local Centre - comprises a mix of small scale developments, open spaces and townscape which create a very distinctive sense of place. The buildings reflect contemporary lifestyles and innovation, providing low energy consumption, whilst referencing the vernacular farmland architecture that can be found in the area.

Javier Juberias, Senior Consultant Architect at PRP comments: “We are delighted by this outcome. The Local Centre site will be the ‘keystone’ of these final phases of the masterplan. Our concept was to create developments with their own distinction and identity. We believe that the Local Centre embodies this informal vernacular style of architecture, reflecting some of the detailing and forms of the historic barns.

“Whilst having the pleasure to look at the past, the new development integrates design strategies to optimize the orientation, enhance natural ventilation and leverage the usage of renewables, to meet our prime objective of low carbon buildings."
