Pilgrims Gardens has won the HAPPI award at this week’s Housing Design Awards. The sheltered housing and care home scheme designed by PRP creates homes that seamlessly integrate the landscape to promote health and wellbeing for residents. Located at Evington, Leicester, the scheme for Pilgrim Homes embraces HAPPI recommendations including access to high quality external amenity and strong connections to local community and public services.

Care was taken to retain existing hedgerows and large trees to create a mature setting for the buildings and gardens. The scheme blurs the boundaries to communal gardens with generous balconies and winter gardens, bringing people close to nature. A series of safe and secure garden courtyards are created that have good surveillance from the buildings. They use walls, planting and water features to subtly separate between the sheltered housing and care home so the landscape appears to flow through the development.

Outdoor dining and generous private patios bound by planters all encourage residents to engage with the landscape and each other.
