Cat Dowd explains how the new PRP Academy, an initiative born from gratitude, empowers staff – especially women – with tailored development opportunities to foster leadership and elevate the built environment sector.

Being grateful means genuinely appreciating the diverse skills, unique talents, and dedication every team member brings to our work. This appreciation helps us cultivate an environment that inspires growth, fosters innovation, and ultimately, elevates the quality of what we deliver to our communities.

The focus on appreciation naturally led us to consolidate PRP’s ongoing investment in staff development. We knew that to truly empower our workforce, particularly women striving for leadership in a demanding sector, we needed a dedicated and bespoke platform.

This vision became a reality in June 2025 with the proud launch of the PRP Academy. More than just a training portal, the Academy represents our unwavering commitment to offering tailored career development opportunities, equipping our staff with the specific tools and confidence to excel in their roles and grow into future leadership positions within the built environment. Our first summer program, focusing specifically on project leadership and broader leadership training, was met with great enthusiasm.

The curriculum was carefully designed to cover key skills needed across our work, ensuring a holistic approach to development. For example, the ‘Project Leader Essentials’ stream delved deep into the practicalities of our operations, covering vital areas like mastering the business reporting cycle, implementing robust quality assurance protocols, and executing comprehensive project planning strategies. This ensures our leaders are adept at navigating complex challenges and managing projects efficiently from inception to completion, safeguarding both our operational efficiency and our reputation for delivering excellence.

In parallel, we tackled crucial sector-specific technical skills through our impactful ‘Design for Compliance’ module. Participants gained in-depth knowledge of essential housing design standards, evolving building regulations, and critical product specifications. For a sector like housing, where safety, sustainability, and user well-being are paramount, a deep understanding of these technical requirements is non-negotiable. This module reinforced our shared commitment to maintaining the highest standards of excellence and ensuring safety in every single development we undertake. However, true leadership extends significantly beyond technical proficiency.

Our ‘Coaching for Success’ modules were foundational to the program. These sessions explored the impact of good leadership, delving into the nuanced differences between effective leadership & management, and highlighting the transformative power of Noble Purpose Leadership – inspiring our team to connect their work to a greater societal good. We refined critical soft skills through sessions on psychological safety, practical coaching methodologies, and effective mentoring techniques, all vital for fostering collaborative teams and an inclusive employee life cycle where everyone feels valued and empowered.

The tangible and positive impact of this initiative has already been rewarding to witness. We were delighted to see that an impressive 80% of our staff actively engaged with these development opportunities within just the first few months post-launch. This high level of participation is a powerful testament not only to the perceived quality and direct relevance of the PRP Academy’s offerings, but also to the inherent drive and ambition of our incredible team.

By actively investing in their potential, we affirm our gratitude for their dedication and contributions, fostering a robust pipeline of support for current and aspiring female leaders who are shaping the future of housing. Ultimately, the PRP Academy is much more than a training initiative; it is gratitude in action, actively building a stronger, more resilient sector for all.
