St Mary’s Island in Chatham’s historic dockyards is being redeveloped into a new community of 2,000 homes. PRP has created a striking neighbourhood centre that forms the community’s physical and social heart.
The centre is comprised of two buildings: a ‘village hall’ with hall, catering facilities, meetings rooms and offices and a doctor’s surgery. Although two separate entities they create a single building that wraps around a public courtyard. Each building is naturally ventilated and flooded with daylight.
Sustainability is further boosted by solar water heating and photovoltaic panels, while a series of mono-pitched roofs form elegant and distinctive architecture.
