Elton House care home features 71 private apartments that vary from studios to 1 bedroom suites across 4 floors with generous communal space. This was a challenging site and a departure for our client located in a highly constricted urban location in the commercial zone east of Watford.
All useable garden space is situated at roof level above under-croft parking. The configuration of the building with its two wings creates a green 'oasis' sheltering the garden from unsightly views and the noise of local roads and industrial land.
The garden comprises a concentric series of circular paths flanked by raised beds and sinuous wildflower mounds planted in multi-stem fruit and nut trees for dappled shade and intimacy.
The planting mirrors the concentric design with strong bands of evergreens and ornamental grasses for structural interest throughout the year. This complements the raised areas which are filled with fragrant, colourful and tactile plants all within touching distance.
Wisteria and passion flower trail over the roof parapet providing falling curtains of greenery and seasonal colour to the entrance court below. Additionally, a giant scarlet oak spans the space between the ground and roof levels.
