PRP was commissioned to give five 1960s tower blocks on the Tamworth Estate a new lease of life and a sustainable future. The whole estate sits within the Old Trafford Regeneration Masterplan area, the redevelopment of the Towers was the first major piece of work to be undertaken as part of this plan.
The ambition was that the project would also make an impact on the wider area, helping to create a neighbourhood where residents are proud to live and want to stay, and with the help of extensive community engagement this has been achieved.
The completed project went on to win the Housing category in the 2013 AJ Retrofit awards. The judges praised the towers’ recladding as a ‘replicable and thorough approach, which transformed the image of the estate by going beyond compliance - a sensible model for what should be done to this type of estate.’
In addition the judges said that the project stood out for ‘tackling behavioural change with extensive tenant engagement.’
