Desborough Road is located in High Wycombe, a large town in the south of Buckinghamshire. The site falls within the Leigh Street Quarter and the Leigh Street Furniture Heritage Conservation Area.
This residential scheme comprises 85 homes arranged over three blocks, with residents’ amenity, public realm and a basement car park.
The proposal responds to the industrial character of the area in terms of bulk, mass, access and overall design approach. The material palette has been designed to complement the character of the existing Birch House building opposite. The composition of the brick facade, together with large industrial style windows, a regular and reticular warehouse design style, and pitched roofs, responds to the local vernacular.
The site addresses significant level changes. The design of the basement carpark has taken advantage of this. The change in level also creates an opportunity to provide a terraced podium courtyard for the residents at the heart of the site, resulting in a playful and dynamic approach to the design.
The development will provide visual and physical links between Leigh Street and Desborough Road, mediating in scale and architectural design between these two very different streets.
